Ginger is a true superfood
Google search “health benefits of” and the next word that appears first on the list is the word “ginger.” That’s because there is a plethora of benefits for eating and drinking ginger. And the reason our Ginger Beer is one of the most popular beverages at our vegan restaurant in Nashville, TN.
Eat to Live is a motto of Vege-licious. I love the taste of ginger, and I also love the health benefits.
Studies show many health benefits
According to an article in Medical News Today, the possible health benefits of ginger include reducing nausea, pain and inflammation. Did your Mom ever give you ginger ale when you had an upset stomach? There is evidence that it helped settle the queasiness.
Ginger is part of the Zingiberaceae family (along with cardamom and turmeric). The part of the plant that is harvested is the root and can be consumed fresh, powdered, dried or in an oil or juice form.
Our own recipe
The recipe for Vege-licious ginger beer is my own and that’s a proprietary secret. We can tell you it has a little love and spice, not a lot of sugar and it is non-alcoholic.
I have spent a lot of time researching the benefits of spices and I believe that ginger has powerful medicinal abilities. It’s been used in Chinese medicine for centuries.
Additional healing properties documented by many physicians and health resources include:
• Helps to lower blood sugars
• Improves heart disease risk factors
• Helps treat chronic indigestion
• May lower cholesterol levels
• The active ingredient in fresh ginger, gingerol, can help fight infections
• Powdered ginger may significantly reduce menstrual pain
Current studies on cancer and Alzheimer’s
Similarly, test using ginger among middle-aged women showed improved reaction time and working memory and leads researchers to believe that ginger may be helpful in improving brain function and protecting against Alzheimer’s disease.
The bottom line is ginger can be enjoyed for its taste and its health benefits.
Personal Cold and Flu Tonic
I’ve never had to worry about the cold or flu virus overtaking my household. Fresh lemon juice would stop a cough immediately!
The recipe is: Cut one half-inch of fresh ginger. Add 1-2 fresh squeezed lemon(s) and one cup of lukewarm or hot water. For an extra kick, add a pinch of cayenne pepper. Process in blender until liquid is smooth and no longer stringy from the ginger. I did leave the ginger out of my very young children’s tonic and added agave nectar.
